About West Indianapolis Branch

When West Indianapolis was annexed to the city in 1897, the Librarian, Eliza Browning, and the Superintendent of Schools organized a little library which became the fifth branch in the public library system. First located "in the valley" on a low lot endangered by White River floods, the library was soon moved to a little one-story building on higher ground in the yard of School No. 46 on Howard Street.

On January 12, 1912, a new building, built with funds from the Carnegie grant of 1909, was dedicated at 1926 West Morris Street.  Service continued in the Carnegie building until November 15, 1986, when the West Indianapolis Library moved into its present 5,000 square-foot facility at 1216 South Kappes Street.

In 2004 it became the first total self-check library branch in the IMCPL system.
