News from Norbert Krapf, Indiana Poet Laureate

Hoosier Dylan @ the Athenaeum

Advance tickets will still be available for $15 at  Luna Music (both locations) and Indy CD & Vinyl until approximately 2:00 p.m. tomorrow, Saturday the 9th. After that, they will be sold for $18 at the door beginning at 6:00 p.m.

If you haven’t been to what for years was called “The American Cabaret Theatre,” now the Athenaeum Theatre, you’ll love it. It’s all tables and chairs seating on different levels. You can buy beer and wine and order food in the upstairs foyer, now an art gallery, just outside the theatre, and bring it all with you inside to your table. Doors open at 6:30, it’s first come, first table, and the show begins at 7:30.

For an excellent preview by NUVO music critic Scott Shoger, which quotes from a new poem I’ll be reciting, “Hoosier Dylan,” with backing by my bluesy buddy Gordon Bonham, go to http://www.nuvo.net/music/article/dylan-and-elvis-resurrected.

Folks, you don’t want to miss this one. Hoosier Dylan is the most exciting event I’ve been part of since moving back to Indiana from the New York area in 2004. In my 34 years there, New York never hosted a show as cool, enjoyable, and unforgettable as this one! Be part of it!  It’s an old-fashioned revival show! Bring your dancing shoes, if you feel like it, and put them on after you take off your boots!

Stay warm but be cool!

A group of Indiana’s finest musicians, along with the Indiana Poet Laureate, will pay tribute to Bob Dylan at 7:30 (doors 6:30) in the Athenaeum Theatre on Jan. 9, 2010.   Jennie DeVoe, Gordon Bonham, Jason Wilber, Tim Grimm, Bobbie Jane Lancaster, The White Lightning Boys, and Joyous Garde will sing songs by arguably the greatest songwriter of the twentieth century, and Norbert Krapf, Indiana Poet Laureate, will recite Dylan-related poems with backing by Bonham and Grimm. Producer Grimm observes: “Dylan has served as the model for all singer-songwriters to follow. He was the first folk musician to go electric and the first successful writer of political and social commentary on a mass scale.”  Krapf says this show is his best vehicle for accomplishing his IPL mission of “reuniting those kissing kin, poetry and music.”

For a sample of Hoosier Dylan by Tim Grimm, Bobbie Lancaster, and Norbert Krapf, follow this link: http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=1244436593984.

Advance tickets for Hoosier Dylan are now available for $15 at Luna Music, both the Mass Ave. and College & 52nd St. locations, and Indy CD & Vinyl, Broad Ripple Ave. Door price: $18.

OTIS GIBBS, Shelby Kelley at Redbud

Hello Everyone!

It’s time for the much anticipated return of OTIS GIBBS to the Redbud Tree House Concert ’stage’!  An Indiana native from the little town of Wanamaker, Otis now resides in Nashville, making his own brand of the people’s music, touring the UK with Bill Bragg and performing in other parts of Europe, singing his special brand of folk music all around the US, and always returning to Indy several times a year. Happily for us, he makes a stop the Sunday after Christmas for our house concert series.

I won’t really say too much more about Otis - other people in other places have said volumes.  If you’ve never heard Otis, RSVP for the house concert FIRST, then check out http://otisgibbs.com, http://www.nodepression.com/profile/OtisGibbs .

We also have the pleasure of having Shelby Kelley start the night off.  Check out Nuvo’s article and CD review of “Alone” at http://www.nuvo.net/music/article/cd-review-shelby-kelley-alone, and www.myspace.com/shelbykelleymusic . I think you’ll agree that December 27th will be an amazing night of music!

I have already received 13 RSVPS, so please don’t delay in hitting that Reply button to save your spot.  If you have already RSVP’d, I’d ask that you do so again.  Don’t worry, I have you on a list, but just like Santa, I want to check it twice!  Last year we had standing room only.

Suggested donation: $10

Next Redbud Tree House Concert

Almost Merry Christmas, music lovers!

It’s time for our next Redbud Tree House Concert.  On Sunday, December 13th at 6:00pm, The Maple Trio will perform their very special blend of acoustic music for us.  If you love blueprintmusic, you’ll recognize The Maple Trio.  Apart from blueprintmusic, band members Matt Koher, Grover Parido, and Doug Sauter have formed their own ensemble. The trio, whose instrumentation varies on combinations of fiddle, mandolin, guitar, cello, and banjo, calls on many genres of music, making their eclectic sounds appeal to a wide range of audiences. The Maple Trio also introduces completely new sounds to their listeners with their own original pieces.  In 2005, they released, Carrollton Christmas.

I was trying to figure out what else to say about these guys, these wonderful musicians who collectively have a beautiful sound that will usher us happily into the Christmas season. I decided that the article done last February by Nuvo couldn’t be beat, so please, read on!  http://www.nuvo.net/music/article/maple-trio-language-earth-house

More Redbud Tree House Concerts

Post from Cyndi Wagner:

Greetings Fellow House Concert Devotees!!!

Hmmm, if it’s November, then it must be time to welcome another Redbud Tree House Concert favorite, Jason Wilber, Sunday, November 15th at 6PM!!

Jason has two new CDs set to be released on December 8th, Ghost of Summers Past AND Live and Otherwise Volume 2!  I’m pretty sure we’re going to get to hear some new material on the 15th.  I can’t wait!

Most of you know that Jason lives in Bloomington and is John Prine’s ace guitar player, BUT, he is an accomplished musical storyteller in his own right. Jason has gained notoriety playing lead guitar for other notable folk, rock, and country artists Hal Ketchum, Greg Brown, Iris DeMent, Todd Snider, Greg Trooper, and Carrie Newcomer. He collaborates often in the studio and on stage with another fellow Hoosier and house concert favorite Tim Grimm!

Highlights of Jason’s work with John Prine include two Grammy nominated albums: Live On Tour and In Spite of Ourselves (which spent 32 weeks on the Billboard Country Charts) and the 2006 Grammy Award winning album Fair & Square.
